About
Radiologist by training, builder by temperament. The short version of how those two things became one job.
In the clinic, Dr. Jason Lai has read more than 2,000 CBCT studies across complex oral and maxillofacial pathology. He trained in oral and maxillofacial radiology at UCLA and teaches faculty, residents, and alumni through continuing education lectures.
In the lab, the same images he reads clinically are the ones he trains models on: deep learning for canine impaction and TMJ disease, a CBCT segmentation model built with agentic AI tools, and a teleradiology platform written from scratch. The clinical eye keeps the research honest.
Off the clock, he is a Bay Area kid, Los Altos High School and all, who never grew out of picking up a new sport and staying with it until it sticks. Volleyball, climbing, golf, pickleball, and scuba diving have all had their turn, along with a steady meditation practice. He travels with his parents whenever the calendars line up.
If you are working on imaging AI, dental education, or anything where a radiologist who builds is useful, that is the kind of thing he wants to hear about.
